Trail Alert: Air Force Academy Section Closed Indefinitely
The Santa Fe Trail through the U.S. Air Force Academy is now closed indefinitely. Here's what ADT hikers need to know — and the verified alternate route that's already in your GPS data. 🥾
Hi [First Name],
Quick heads-up for anyone planning to hike the southern Colorado sections of the American Discovery Trail this year.
The U.S. Air Force Academy has implemented updated access procedures in response to the current conflict in the Middle East. As part of those changes, the Santa Fe Trail crossing through the installation is now closed indefinitely. There's no credible threat — this is a security posture adjustment consistent with U.S. Northern Command directives for continental installations.
But for ADT hikers, it means the primary route through the Academy is off-limits for the foreseeable future.
The good news? We've already got you covered.

Back in December, we published an update about a fully verified alternate route around the Academy — field-tested by Steve Gefell during his thru-hike this past summer. That alternate is already integrated into our GPS data and turn-by-turn guides, clearly marked with all critical decision points and service notes along the way.
The route actually has some real advantages — it passes through Colorado Springs neighborhoods with access to Amazon Locker locations, restaurants, lodging, and even an REI. If you're due for a resupply or a rest day, it turns this closure into a useful stop.
If you're a current subscriber, your GPS data already includes this alternate. Nothing you need to do — just follow the waypoints when you reach the Academy section.
If you're still in the planning stage, this is exactly the kind of real-time intelligence that makes the difference between a detour and a disaster. 🥾
Stay safe out there — both on the trail and off.
